Went ashore at Stromness where we did a hike up to the waterfall that Shackleton descended while rescuing his men. Saw lots of fur seals along the way. Then sailed to the whaling station at Grytviken where we got to walk around the abandoned machinery and tour the small gift shop. We even got to feel the pelt of a king penguin, so soft and thick (no wonder they stay warm)! After a quick stop at Shackleton’s grave we went back to the ship for afternoon cocktails.

More king penguins! The morning started at Gold Harbour, the third largest king colony in the world. We spent a bunch of time hanging out on the beach and watching the busy penguins going back and forth. Also saw a couple of “piles” of big elephant seals. After lunch we moved to St. Andrew’s Bay, the largest king penguin colony in the world. The wind had picked up so the landing was a bit tricky, but no problem. Walked up a small hill to look over the massive colony as the wind started to pick up and there was a very light rain. Just as a bright rainbow formed over the colony, a katabatic wind picked up and we were told we had to leave quickly. Made for an exciting exit from the island. At recap we were told of a big storm headed our way so the crew had decided to head for the Falklands a bit early. Made for a bit of rocking and rolling during the night!
