Vail, Colorado - June 4-11
On June 4th Randy headed to Vail to attend the Adventure Film School. The setting was the 2014 GoPro Mountain Games, with all kinds of adventure sports. Randy met the instructors and the two other students at our hotel, Antlers at Vail, where we had an introduction to the course.
Thursday morning we headed in to town and met with some folks from GoPro who took us on a bike ride to try out some of their new mounts for their cameras. Afterwards they showed us how to use their editing software, but instead Randy fired up the copy of iMovie that was on the laptops they were letting us use and created a movie trailer before the lesson was done. Thursday afternoon we drove up the mountain a bit to get some aerial shots with the Phantom. Fun!
On Friday Randy met with kayaker Eric Jackson, as well as Rich & Yvet and Tonka who were competing in Dock Dogs. There were lots of activities going on which made for lots of fun stuff to film. An interview with Eric and footage of him in preliminaries filled up the afternoon. In the evening we went back in to town to check out the night’s concert for a while.
Saturday morning Randy did another interview with Eric, then went over to the Dock Dogs venue to film Tonka and Rich. In the evening we all went in to town to watch the night’s concert a bit, then Randy had sushi with Preston, one of the instructors. Afterwards we met up with Liz and Nasa (two more instructors) at a bar with live music. Afterwards we headed back to our hotel, with a bit of IR recording along the way…
Sunday morning Randy picked up a couple of extra video shots, then went back to the hotel to start editing. He was having a bit of trouble getting started, so he went to the grocery store, then started editing some of the simpler parts of the movie and things started falling into place. The whole group hung out in the AFS room doing editing. We had pizza delivered and had a fun time.
Monday morning Randy was up early and did some editing. By noon he had a rough edit put together. With some guidance from Preston and Michael Brown, another instructor, some good fine tuning was done. The afternoon was occupied with finding some good music, then in the evening we all walked over to Garfinkel’s for dinner.
Tuesday was occupied with additional editing and rendering of the final movie. Tuesday evening there was a public event where Michael Brown spoke about his filmmaking, then all of the students films were shown. We were all presented with diplomas, in the form of AFS magazine covers. By the time we all got in to town for dinner, there wasn’t much open. We settled on a pizza place where we sat outside. Afterwards we had a drink at the one place open late on a Tuesday in Vail. Then it was back to the hotel to sleep. Waking up early the next morning it was a 2 hour drive back to Denver for the flight home.
