| On Saturday February 21st we drove over to Emeryville from the loft to catch a 9:30am Amtrak train to Reno. We had reserved a first class sleeper car, which was near the front of the train. Behind it was the dining car and a lounge car with lots of windows and swiveling seats. It took a couple of hours to get to Sacramento; the scenery along that part of the trip wasn't the most interesting, but it was fun to watch it go by. After lunch we passed Sacramento and started climbing into the Sierras. The scenery got much more dramatic, with steep cliffs and tall trees. We hit the snow line around 2pm and kept on towards Truckee. We followed the Truckee river on into Reno, winding through the mountains.
We arrived in Reno around 4:30, the train dropped us right in the middle of downtown. We caught a cab to our hotel, the Hilton, which was a couple of miles away. At the entrance to the Hilton we saw a "Bungee Chair" ride that looked fun. After checking in we walked back down to it and gave it a try. It was pretty scary, but lots of fun, and very smooth. Afterwards we took a cab back into town to walk around a bit. Reno seems like something of a time warp, kind of like Vegas 20 or 25 years ago. We went up to the top of the Phoenix hotel for a drink, thinking we'd get a good view, but their "rooftop" restaurant and bar didn't afford much of a view. We decided to head back to the Hilton for dinner where we picked a Thai place. Afterwards it was back to the room for a movie ("Elf", kind of cute) and sleep. In the morning we had breakfast and went back to the train station where we boarded our return train at about 10am. We had a somewhat nicer view since it was a bit clearer and the sun was peeking through. We spent most of the return trip in our cabin, watching the scenery go by. Rick napped a bit after lunch, and Randy worked on organizing pictures from the photo walk last weekend. As we approached Emeryville we walked back to the lounge car and watched the scenery go by. We got a great view of the "mothball" fleet, a rainbow and lots of bridges and other trains. We talked for a bit with a couple from Los Gatos that we had run into several times on the trip. As the sun set we arrived in Emeryville, about an hour late. We decided to head straight back to Los Altos, gotta catch the final episode of Sex in the City! The trip had been lots of fun, very relaxing and completely different from any trip we've taken before. |
